Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has come in for criticism in Italian media for his performance in the Argentine national team’s shock loss to Saudi Arabia at the World Cup.
The 25-year-old received a score of just 5.5/10 for his performance in the player ratings for the group stage match published in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello sport, via FCInterNews.
Martinez started for the Albiceleste in a match where they will have been expected to get their World Cup group stage campaign off to a winning start against inferior opposition on paper.
However, after Argentina took a 1-0 lead into halftime, an impressive Saudi Arabia ripped up the script in the second period.
The Albiceleste’s inability to convert first half dominance into more than a slender one-goal lead, and then their lack of attacking potency when chasing the game in the second half ultimately cost them.
For the Gazzetta, Martinez was not up to par as Argentina failed to do enough in attack to get anything out of the match.
