Legendary former AC Milan midfielder Alessandro Costacurta believes that both his old team the Rossoneri and also Inter got very kind draws for the Champions League round of sixteen.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInter1908, the former Rossoneri defender highlighted the kinds of teams that the two Milan rivals avoided in the round of sixteen of Europe’s top competition.

Inter and Milan both finished second in their respective Champions League groups.

In the Nerazzurri’s case, this meant that round of sixteen ties against Chelsea or Real Madrid were possible, as was a nightmare draw of Manchester City.

Meanwhile, for the Rossoneri, Real and City were possible opponents, as were Bayern Munich.

Whilst drawing Porto and Tottenham Hotspur respectively will give each of the two teams a real test in the next round, the sense is certainly that things could have been worse on paper.

“I’ll make a tired point, but in my opinion both had a lucky draw, not so much based on the difficulty of facing Porto and Tottenham, but based on who they avoided in the draw,” Costacurta said.

“Better not to face teams like PSG, City or Real Madrid, right?”

“They will probably be balanced round of sixteen ties, but both can make it to the next round.”
