Lautaro Martinez has been the centre of criticism after failing to make an impact during Argentina’s win over Mexico at the World Cup, with the Inter striker withdrawn in the second half.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport, Martinez was blasted for his subpar display during the 2-0 victory at the Lusail Stadium yesterday, as Argentina secured a win through second half goals from Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez.

Martinez was awarded a 4.5 in the newspaper’s player ratings, and was criticised for being ineffectual and making little impact on the game in his 63 minutes on the pitch in Qatar.

The former Racing Club striker was taken off and replaced by Manchester City’s 22-year-old Julian Alvarez, with the replacement catching the eye with his cameo.

Indeed, Alvarez was rated at 7 for a display full of determination and energy, helping to revive Argentina after a sluggish first half in order to snatch victory and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
