Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has come in for criticism after a lacklustre performance during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico in the World Cup yesterday.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri star made little impact in the Group C match at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, settled by second half goals from Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez.

Indeed, Martinez was adjudged to have put in the worst performance amongst Argentina’s squad, with the newspaper giving him a 5 in their post-match player ratings.

The former Racing Club player was criticised for wasting a header in the first half and for being a ghost of his usual self, with some good runs not enough to salvage his performance.

Martinez was substituted in the second half and replaced by Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, as Argentina salvaged their campaign with victory following a shock 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their first match.
