Legendary former Inter defender Andreas Brehme is hopeful that his countryman Robin Gosens can find a place for himself at the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Italian news outlet MagazinePragma, the German expressed his hope that the former Atalanta wingback can find a role for himself, and also expressed surprise at the 28-year-old’s exclusion from the German national team’s squad at the World Cup.

Gosens’s 2022 has hardly gone as he will have expected.

After joining Inter from Atalanta in January, the 28-year-old was prevented by fitness and the form of Ivan Perisic from getting much playing time with the Nerazzurri over the second half of last season.

Gosens will have been expected to nail down a starting place for himself this time around, but has instead found himself behind Federico Dimarco in the pecking order.

This has even led to the surprise omission of Gosens from the Germany squad at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

Brehme argued that “I would have called up Gosens – he played well for example away to Barcelona, but he has also done well in other games even if he’s only played for a few minutes.”

“I hope he can stay and establish himself as part of the Inter project over the rest of the season, even if I could see him going to another team.”

Regarding Inter’s form this season, Brehme said that “The team need a little more consistency, but it’s a long season and I see the title race going right down to the end again.”
