Inter captain Samir Handanovic will only be offered a new contract if he proves to be willing to accept a role as backup to Andre Onana next season.
This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the hierarchy with the 38-year-old now being the backup to Onana is considered to be set in stone, and so a new deal would be offered with the clear intent of Handanovic staying as the backup.
Handanovic extended his contract with Inter in the summer transfer window prior to the current season.
The Slovenian went into the campaign continuing to be the Nerazzurri’s first-choice keeper in Serie A despite the arrival of Onana from Ajax, with the 26-year-old signed as his long-term successor.
Over the campaign so far, however, Onana has played his way into the starting role in goal.
Accordingly, whilst the Nerazzurri would be ready to extend Handanovic’s deal past next summer, it would only be on the basis of him remaining as backup to the Cameroonian.
