Inter striker Lautaro Martinez could once again be on the bench for the Argentine national team in their round of sixteen clash with Australia on Sunday.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 25-year-old could once again be left out in favour of Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez.

Martinez cut a frustrated figure after Argentina’s 2-0 win against Poland in their third and final group stage match.

The Inter striker had come off the bench and once again failed to score, despite the Albiceleste securing their place in the round of sixteen of the competition.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had decided to leave Martinez out of the starting eleven after disappointing performances in the first two group stage matches.

The coach played Man City striker Alvarez in place of Martinez, and Alvarez rewarded the trust put in him with a good display and an important goal to put the game to bed.

Now, it doesn’t look at all unlikely that Scaloni will once again favour Alvarez over Martinez in Argentina’s next match.
