Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti feels that Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni’s decision to start Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez over Nerazzurri striker Lautaro Martinez against Poland paid off.

Speaking to Argentine news outlet La Nacion, via FCInterNews, Zanetti gave his thoughts on the Albiceleste’s decision to drop Martinez for Alvarez in the team’s third and final group stage match on Wednesday.

Martinez had started for Argentina in both of their first two group stage matches, but dropped to the bench for their third against Poland.

Manchester City striker Alvarez started in the Inter player’s place against Poland, and the decision proved to be an effective one by Scaloni, as the team won with Alvarez wrapping up the win with their second goal.

Scaloni took a gamble by trusting Alvarez over Martinez, who had been Argentina’s starting striker going into the World Cup, in a match that the team absolutely needed a result in, but in the end his faith was repaid.

Zanetti gave his thoughts, stating that “Lionel trusts the depth of his squad, he trusts all of his players.”

“He chose to take a risk by starting Julian Alvarez over Lautaro Martinez, and he also put his trust in Alexis Mac Allister,” the Nerazzurri Vice-President noted, “but in the end his decisions were proven to be the right ones because the team qualified for the round of sixteen.”
