Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti has revealed that both Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez and Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez had been targeted by the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Argentine broadcaster ESPN, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri Vice-President revealed that the two Argentines currently starring for their countries at the World Cup in Qatar had been on Inter’s radar but were unattainable for financial reasons.

Alvarez and Fernandez have been two of the Argentine national team’s breakout stars at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

Both of the young duo made the switch to European clubs from River Plate over the summer transfer window ahead of the current season.

Neither of the pair transferred to Inter, but as Zanetti revealed, both had been targeted.

Now, both Alvarez and Fernandez are starring for the Albaceleste, but had Inter had the financial power to sign them, then both could well have also been doing so for Inter.

“You could immediately see that they had that profile of players destined for great things,” he said of the pair.

“I could also point to Lautaro Martinez, who joined us at the age of 21,” Zanetti continued, “now he’s 25 and has grown a lot.”

“When you have faith in young players, you don’t have to evaluate their immediate quality, but what they can become over a period of 4-5 years,” he explained.

“I like the character they have, when you play for a top team character is important and they have it.”

“They were names we were interested in signing, however, given the club’s financial situation we were unable to move for them,” he added.
