Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries has received praise for his man-of-the-match performance in the Netherlands’ 3-1 win over the USA at the World Cup yesterday.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 26-year-old was the best player on the pitch as the Oranje booked a place in the quarter-final in Qatar, as he provided two assists for teammates before netting the third goal late on.

The newspaper argued that he was in unstoppable form and carried the burden of pushing Louis van Gaal’s side through to the next round as star forward Cody Gakpo struggled to make a significant impact.

He was awarded an 8 in their player ratings and it was highlighted that his three goal involvements had only been matched by Dutch greats Johan Cruyff and Rob Resenbrinck as previous World Cups.

Having caught the eye against the USA, Dumfries was described as having rediscovered the form that made him stand out at Euro 2020 last year.
