Former Lazio and Torino gaolkeeper Luca Marchegiani feels that part of the reason for Inter striker Lautaro Martinez’s recent difficulties could be that he has trouble getting past periods where he is out of form.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the former keeper highlighted the role of difficulty in reacting to setbacks mentally in Martinez’s occasional patches of bad form.

Martinez has developed a reputation for scoring goals in fits and starts rather than on an even and consistent basis at Inter.

The 25-year-old has scored no shortage of important goals for the team over the past few season, but has also gone through lengthy goal droughts.

The Argentine is currently in the midst of one of these droughts with his national team at the World Cup, having failed to score or assist a goal in four matches for the Albiceleste.

“I don’t fully understand why he has these difficulties,” Marchegiani said, “he has everything needed to do well in a team that has a lot of possession and is able to get good deliveries to him.”

“But he has something limiting him, he seems unable to react when the setbacks come along.”
