Inter still feel that they are very much in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram despite the competition from Bayern Munich.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri have gotten signals that the race for the 25-year-old’s signature is far from over even though he will not leave in January.

Inter consider Thuram a major target, so much so that they had been ready to try to sign him from Gladbach for a fee of around €10 million in the January transfer window rather than waiting for his contract to expire next summer.

This was a similar strategy to how the Nerazzurri wrapped up a deal to sign midfielder Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspur in January of 2020, six months before the expiration of his deal with the Premier League club.

Thuram has expressed little interest in leaving Gladbach in January, and has instead told the Nerazzurri that he plans to see out the rest of the season with his current club and then make a decision on his future in June.

Thus, the race for Thuram’s signature will be to sign him on a free transfer next summer.

German champions Bayern are among the Frenchman’s suitors, and could pose the most formidable competition for the Nerazzurri.

However, as of yet there are no indications that Thuram has decided on or has a preference to join Bayern.

As far as Inter are concerned, they are still very much in the hunt and have a chance of convincing Thuram to join next summer ahead of Bayern.
