The agent of Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has revealed that the 25-year-old has been playing through significant pain in his ankle at the World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking to Argentine broadcaster Radio la Red, via FCInterNews, Martinez’s agent Alejandro Camano argued that the striker has still shown why he is so highly regarded even though he has been hindered by his physical condition, and also backed him to start alongside Julian Alvarez.

Martinez had gone into the World Cup expected to be one of Argentina’s key players.

So far, the 25-year-old Nerazzurri striker has not exactly lived up to expectations, with no goals or assists in the Albiceleste’s four matches at the tournament so far.

Martinez looks to have lost his starting place in attack to Manchester City striker Alvarez based on the past two matches.

Camano, however, feels that physical difficulties have played a big role in Martinez’s struggles on the pitch.

Moreover, the agent backs the 25-year-old to show his best form despite these troubles, and also feels that he could start in attack alongside Alvarez rather than the two strikers being in competition for a place.

“He’s playing through physical problems, he has significant pain in his ankle,” Camano said.

“He’s working a lot to put the pain behind him, and once it is he should be flying,” the agent continued.

“He’s a top striker in world football,” he argued. “He’s very mentally strong.”

“His disallowed goals [in Argentina’s group stage opener against Saudi Arabia] were hard for him to digest,” Camano also noted.

Of the possibility of Martinez and Alvarez playing together, Camano stated that “They can bring out the best in one another’s characteristics, they get on well together.”
