The Italian government is getting closer and closer to lifting the ban on sponsorships by betting companies within football.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the federal government in Italy is moving towards reforms that would allow some betting companies to sponsor teams, a move that could affect Serie A clubs significantly.

Under current regulations, Italian football clubs are not allowed to take on betting companies as sponsors.

This is meant to discourage gambling addiction among football fans.

However, this regulation is also estimated to have cost Italian football clubs around €100 million in potential sponsorship revenues.

The federal government is reportedly beginning to rethink their approach on the matter.

According to the Gazzetta, the government’s thinking is now to rewrite the regulations to focus more on finding the right balance between risk and skill rather than banning sponsorships by betting companies outright.
