Inter captain Samir Handanovic could have one of three possible paths forward past the end of the current season.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the Slovenian could stay on as backup to Andre Onana in the squad, seek a move away for a starting role, or even retire from playing and join Simone Inzaghi’s coaching staff.

As things stand, Inter’s plan is to keep Handanovic on as backup to Onana.

It has been made clear to the 38-year-old that he would be the Cameroonian’s backup going forward rather than fighting for a starting place.

However, the club would like to keep the captain on in this role.

Handanovic is considered to be more than capable of being the backup goalkeeper for at least another season past the end of the current one, and so the club have not yet looked around seriously for a different backup, despite transfer links such as Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer.

Handanovic signed a one-season extension last summer, which saw his wages reduced to €2.5 million net for the campaign plus €600,000 in appearance-related add-ons.

The offer of another extension would likely be at further reduced salary terms.

Should the 38-year-old decide that he is not yet ready to accept a backup role, he could also decide to leave on a free transfer to join a team where he would be guaranteed regular playing time.

One last possibility on the table would be for Handanovic to hang up his boots entirely.

Should the Slovenian decide to retire from playing, there would be a good chance of him being offered a role in the Nerazzurri’s coaching staff.
