Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella still has ambitions of coming back in the title race and winning Serie A this season.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old stressed that in his view, the team have gotten back on their feet after a tough start to the campaign and can still fight for the title.

Inter are eleven points back from Serie A league leaders Napoli.

This is the result of a start to the season that could be generously described as inconsistent.

The Partenopei, by contrast, have been close to perfect in the league, dropping just four points from their fifteen matches prior to the World Cup break.

However, there will be 23 matches to go in the league once the club season resumes in January.

Barella, for his part, still has hope and feels that a comeback in the title race is an achievable goal.

Of the team’s poor start to the season, Barella reflected that “At that point we had lost focus, we believed that everything was just due to us based on what we’d done in the past.”

“We didn’t really take to the pitch to win.”

“And this wasn’t how things went, particularly in the league, the most difficult season I’ve been a part of.”

“But it’s a very long and unusual season, with a World Cup in the middle, so we still believe we can do it,” Barella noted.

“Our goal remains the same as ever: to try to win the Scudetto.”

Of the discussions that took place among the squad to get themselves out of their bad start to the campaign, Barella said that “I have a rule: we don’t talk about what happens in the locker room.”

“However, there are moments when it’s important for us to all look each other in the eyes and talk things out,” he continued.

Barella explained that “Sometimes you have to put the blame on yourself rather than blaming your teammates.”
