Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has revealed that he has been playing through pain in his ankle for parts of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster RAI Radio, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old explained that he had to work to get past some physical difficulties, although now he feels that he can be back to his best.

Martinez’s struggles at the World Cup so far have come as something of a surprise considering the expectations that had been placed upon the Nerazzurri striker to make an impact for his national team.

The exact reasons for the 25-year-old’s inability to make a real impact for Argentina have been something of a reason.

However, fitness issues could be at the heart of some of Matinez’s disappointing performances, and this would seem to be backed up by the player’s revelations.

The striker explained that “I’ve had pain in my ankle over the past few weeks, I’ve worked hard to get fit and recover quickly.”

“Today I had to start on the bench but I’m very satisfied with the work I’m doing,” he said of the Albiceleste’s penalty shootout win over the Netherlands.

“Now I have to work, think about recovering, and focus on Croatia.”
