Inter striker Lautaro Marintez feels regretful over having received significant criticism over his performances with Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia after the Albiceleste’s penalty shootout win over the Netherlands, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old Nerazzurri striker emphasized that he always tries to remain humble and give his best.

Martinez received some vindication as it was his penalty that sent Argentina through to the semifinals of the World Cup after a dramatic quarterfinal clash and shootout with the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old had not managed to make the impact that had been expected of him for his national team at the tournament up to that point, as he has still failed to score or assist a goal.

However, Martinez proved his worth with a well-taken spot kick as the Albiceleste’s final taker in a dramatic shootout win, and feels that he still has more to give.

Of the criticism that he has gotten for his earlier performances, the Inter striker said that “I feel sorry to have been criticized because I always try to give my best with humility, putting my head down and working.”

“My coach Scaloni and my teammates always support me,” he added.

Asked about his Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, Martinez said that “Of course I’ve heard from him. All my teammates and the club staff have congratulated me.”

“Against Croatia it will be very tough,” the 25-year-old said looking ahead to the semifinal matchup.

Martinez also noted that “Recently I’ve been playing a bit within myself due to pain in my ankle, but now I’m feeling better and I’m looking forward to the semifinal.”
