Inter had the chance to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol for just €9 million, but passed up the opportunity, as Real Madrid prepare to swoop for him.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, and as reported by L’Interista.it, the Croatia international was targeted by the Nerazzurri, as well as fellow Serie A clubs Roma and Fiorentina, and could have been signed from Dinamo Zagreb for €9m, with his price at Leipzig skyrocketing following an excellent World Cup campaign.

However, Inter were unable to close a deal for him and he ultimately remained at Dinamo Zagreb, before making the switch to Leipzig for €16m in 2020, and being loaned back to his former club for a year.

It is reported that the Bundesliga club will now seek in excess of €90m for him, as Real Madrid look to battle Chelsea for his signature.

Los Merengues hold the advantage over the Premier League club thanks to Croatia captain Luka Modric, and they are ready to spend big in order to land Gvardiol.

The 20-year-old has represented Croatia on 17 occasions and has helped his side reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
