Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries will address the controversy surrounding his actions in the Netherlands’ World Cup defeat to Argentina with Lautaro Martinez when they return to the club.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Corriere della Sera, the defender incurred the wrath of the Argentina team after appearing to goad them during the penalty shootout in the World Cup quarter-final on Friday, leading to a red card.

Dumfries was part of a group of Dutch players who attempted to goad Martinez as he stepped up to score the winning penalty in the shootout and it led to an angry response from the Argentina team, in an already tense affair in Qatar.

Whilst Dumfries embraced fellow Inter teammate Martinez after the match, it is reported that he will offer a further explanation for his actions to the Nerazzurri striker when they return to the club following the World Cup.

Argentina are set to face Croatia for a place in the final in Doha, with Martinez hoping to reclaim his starting spot in Lionel Scaloni’s team.
