Inter could get a boost in attack in the form of an unleashed Nicolo Barella as Hakan Calhanoglu and Marcelo Brozovic both take on more responsibilities deeper in the pitch.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the new dynamic in midfield with Calhanoglu operating deeper could mean that Barella is the player more free to contribute in attack.
Calhanoglu is the player who filled in for Brozovic in the deepest position in Inter’s midfield during Brozovic’s spell out on the sidelines with a thigh injury this season.
With the Croat back fit, it can be expected that he will return to his customary position at the base of midfield when the club season resumes after the World Cup.
However, this does not mean that Calhanoglu will not continue to have an important function in the team deeper in midfield.
If Brozovic and Calhanoglu can effectively split the duties of building up play deeper, then it could be left to Barella to link up midfield and attack.
The 25-year-old has shown this season how proficient he can be when he has been allowed to get forward, and if the dynamic in midfield changes and allows him to do so more, he may just be getting started.
