Former Lazio, Atalanta, and Palermo head coach Delio Rossi feels that it would be difficult for Inter to switch to a formation that uses both Marcelo Brozovic and Hakan Calhanoglu in deep midfield roles.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInterNews, Rossi gave the view that the Nerazzurri would not be able to easily transition to playing with a double pivot.
Calhanoglu’s form playing in the deepest role in midfield whilst Brozovic was out means that it is not exactly obvious how Inter will set up with the Croat back.
Brozovic has established himself as a highly reliable player in the position, but at the same time, the outstanding performances of Calhanoglu playing there would make him hard to overlook.
One possibility that has been suggested would be playing both of the pair in a double pivot to get the best out of them.
However, Rossi feels that moving to this system from the Nerazzurri’s customary midfield trio wouldn’t be easy.
“Inter are characterized by a specific formation, a 3-5-2.” he said.
“I don’t think that they would be able to change in the direction of playing with a double pivot.”
“In any case,” Rossi added, “they had already been starting to adapt Calhanoglu to playing closer to Brozovic on the pitch.”
