Italian journalist Luca Marchetti feels that Inter striker Romelu Lukaku is one of the big name disappointments at the World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInterNews, the journalist emphasized that Lukaku is one of the players to have not lived up to their reputations on the biggest stage this time around.

The World Cup is always a tournament in which there is immense pressure for players with big reputations at club level to prove themselves with their national teams with the eyes of the world on them.

Accordingly, it is inevitably the case that some players are unable to transfer their best club form to the tournament.

In Lukaku’s case, the Belgian had the misfortune of going into the tournament on the back of some major injury struggles at club level.

There had still been plenty of hope that the 29-year-old could play his way into fitness and form ahead of the tournament, but this did not prove to be the case.

“Some of the big names at the World Cup have disappointed, look at Lukaku, Di Maria, Dybala,” Marchetti said.

“Despite all the hopes, they didn’t quite know how to find their best form.”
