The use of the man under the wall has become a commonplace defensive tactic in football on direct free kick situations over the past few seasons.
However, this is a relatively recent developments, as teams have figured out how important it is to prevent free kick takers from shooting under the wall as it jumps.
Inter defender Marcelo Brozovic was one of the first players to notice this, with the Croat diving in to get in the way of a free kick that was headed under the wall during a Champions League clash against Barcelona in 2018.
The club shared a video of the midfielder’s creative and quick thinking in a post on their official Instagram account.
