Inter are treating Belgium’s early elimination from the 2022 World Cup as a positive, as it is giving them extra time to work on the fitness of striker Romelu Lukaku.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport, the Red Devils’ group stage exit in Qatar has allowed Lukaku to return to the Nerazzurri earlier than anticipated, and Inter’s coaching staff have sought to take advantage of this by drawing up a personalised fitness programme for him.

Lukaku has struggled with injuries since joining Inter on loan from Chelsea in the summer and has only made five appearances for the club this season, so the Biscione are keen to use the World Cup break to get him back up to speed.

The former Manchester United striker has been left behind whilst the squad travel to Seville for a friendly against Real Betis today, and is joined in Milan by Andre Onana, Danilo D’Ambrosio, and Mattia Zanotti in working on fitness regimes.

Joaquin Correa has not travelled to Spain either, but has been given permission to fly out to Qatar and be with the Argentina squad for the World Cup final match against France tomorrow.

The forward was initially selected in Argentina’s squad for the tournament but had to withdraw due to injury.
