The President of Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, has urged a decision to be made on the future of the Stadio San Siro, as Inter and AC Milan seek a new stadium.

The two clubs are keen to move to a new ground and plans have been underway for some time to secure a new home for them, but calls for the existing San Siro to be demolished in order to make way for a new stadium have been met with resistance.

In an interview with Affaritaliani.it whilst at an event organised by Senate group Forza Italia Berlusconi Presidente, Fontana admitted that Inter and Milan needed a modern stadium in order to compete with the top clubs in Europe and to generate greater revenue.

However, he called for a decision to be made and insisted that it was up to the will of the people to determine the future of the San Siro.

“It is clear that there are pros and cons for all the choices, but decisions have to be made because if our teams want to compete at a high level they need to have a modern stadium that allows them to have additional income,” Fontana declared.

“Demolition of the San Siro? I’m not a partisan of anything, I let people evaluate and then decide,” he added.
