The Public Debate Coordinator overseeing the discussions for Inter and AC Milan to move away from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza has argued that the clubs are showing care towards the history of the ground.

With the two city rivals keen to leave the San Siro and move into a new stadium, a debate has sprung up about the future of the existing ground, with calls to demolish it and build the new arena in it’s place, or preserve it due to it’s historical significance in Italian and world football.

In an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of Tuttosport, Andrea Pillon claimed that both Inter and Milan were looking to maintain their historical links to that area of the city by remaining close to it, even if a new stadium is built on the site.

“I realised that this sport implies a strong link with the area. The question of the demolition of San Siro generates many emotions,” Pillon argued.

“The Milanese feel that area almost like their own home, it’s the power of football.

“There are sentimental implications that sometimes lead to somewhat disproportionate reactions. It wasn’t easy for the directors of Milan and Inter to deal with this emotional load which went beyond the specific issues of an important urban redevelopment project.

“But the desire to remain in the San Siro urban area shows that they want to preserve history while equipping themselves with a modern stadium,” he concluded.

Milan have occupied the Stadio San Siro since 1926, whilst Inter have been tenants there since 1947.
