Inter midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has proven himself in a new role after impressing in the 1-1 draw against Real Betis in a friendly in Seville yesterday evening.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Roma player excelled as a second striker, playing off target man Edin Dzeko at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, and has provided coach Simone Inzaghi with a further option for the second half of the season.

Inzaghi deployed a 3-5-1-1 formation, with Dzeko the only senior striker available to him, and the newspaper argued that Mkhitaryan’s position was no longer merely an experiment but now a certainty for after the winter break.

After falling behind late on to a Juanmi goal, Inter were praised for showing maturity and hit back immediately through Matteo Darmian, whilst the Nerazzurri showed determination against a difficult opponent.

The Nerazzurri face two more friendlies, against Reggina and Sassuolo respectively, before returning to Serie A action on 4 January against league leaders Napoli.
