Inter striker Lautaro Martinez may not have scored or assisted a goal in Qatar, but he did certainly play a vital role in Argentina’s win over France in the final at the World Cup.
The 25-year-old received a score of 6/10 for his performance in the player ratings for the match published in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, with his role in Lionel Messi’s extra time goal for 3-2 particularly highlighted.
Martinez came onto the pitch as a substitute for Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez in extra time of yesterday’s triumph over France.
When the Inter striker entered proceedings, the scoreline was level at 2-2.
Martinez was expected to add energy and impetus, and he did exactly that, giving the Albiceleste more of a direct threat running at tired Les Bleus legs.
Whilst the 25-year-old was unable to score any of the chances that fell to him, it was his stinging effort that Les Bleus captain Hugo Lloris could only parry into the path of Lionel Messi.
While this was not the winner that it had looked to be as France equalized late on and sent the match to a penalty shootout, which Argentina won, it was certainly a vital contribution to the Albiceleste’s first World Cup trophy in 36 years.
