Former Napoli and Udinese striker Roberto Sosa feels that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez managed to do just about everything on the pitch except score during the World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking to the Twitch channel of the Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, the Argentine spoke about the 25-year-old’s World Cup campaign, noting his overall contribution despite failing to get on the scoresheet.

On some level, a goal drought for Martinez will not be an unfamiliar sight for Inter fans.

The 25-year-old has gone stretches of several matches without scoring or assisting a goal for his club side in the past, as he did throughout the World Cup with Argentina.

However, those who watch the Nerazzurri will know well that even when Martinez is not on the scoresheet, he does everything he can to be involved in play.

Sosa feels that this was once again the case in Qatar, even if the back of the net remained elusive for the Nerazzurri striker.

“Among the 26 players in Argentina’s squad, Lautaro was the one who came into the tournament in the best form,” he argued, “we saw that at Inter where he and Barella were in the driving forces in both the league and the Champions League.”

“Clearly it wasn’t a good World Cup for him as far as his individual performance, Scaloni chose Alvarez who has different characteristics, he links up with everyone whereas Lautaro is more of a point of reference in attack.”

“But he remains an important player, he did everything but score, and showed incredible quality to set up Messi’s second goal.”
