Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has made the suggestion to the Lega Serie A of reducing the number of teams in the Italian top flight.

This according to today’s print edition of Italian business newspaper Milano Finanza, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri executive has proposed taking steps to reduce the number of fixtures that teams play domestically as possible new European matches pile up.

FIFA recently announced the intention to expand the format of the Club World Cup competition so that it will include 32 teams, played in an initial group stage and then a knockout format similar to the international World Cup.

This has raised some concerns within big European teams and leagues that the addition of even further fixtures to the already crowded schedule could cause problems for some teams.

The announcement comes amid a backdrop of the breakaway “Super League” saga, as well as UEFA’s plans to expand the Champions League to include more matches.

Given that European matches tend to be more lucrative for clubs as well as organizations than domestic matches, several organizations look to be trying to introduce more high-profile matches of this nature.

Coming amid this possibility for more European matches to be played, Marotta has made the proposal that the number of teams in Serie A be reduced.

This would be so that there are fewer matches played domestically, thus easing the burden of additional European and Club World Cup matches on teams and players.
