Inter are seriously targeting Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer on a free transfer next summer to potentially replace captain Samir Handanovic.

This according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.com, who report that the Nerazzurri are closely following the 33-year-old’s situation, as they see him as an ideal candidate to potentially back up Andre Onana in goal starting next season.

Sommer’s contract with Gladbach is currently set to run out at the end of June 2023.

As of yet, there is little indication that the Swiss international will agree a new deal with the Bundesliga club, meaning that he could be free to leave on a free transfer when his deal runs out.

The likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester United are among the teams keen to sign Sommer, whilst the Nerazzurri are also well aware of his potential availability on a free transfer.

According to Calciomercato, the Nerazzurri have lined Sommer up as one of their main targets to potentially replace Handanovic if the Slovenian decides to leave at the end of his current deal.

The 33-year-old is seen as a perfect option to back up first-choice Onana in goal, although a move for him would be dependent on whether he is ready to accept a move to a team where he is not seen as the main starter.

Meanwhile, Calciomercato reports, Inter are also considering who they would replace third-choice goalkeeper Alex Cordaz with should the 39-year-old not extend his contract, which like that of Handanovic expires at the end of June 2023.

One possibility would be for the club to use a youngster like Gabriele Brazao or Filip Stankovic for the third-choice role in the event that Cordaz leaves in the summer.
