Inter striker Romelu Lukaku has been named among the flops of the tournament at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it listed the 29-year-old among their “flop eleven” for the tournament, highlighting the fact that his missed chances for Belgium in their final group stage match against Belgium effectively cost the Red Devils a place in the knockout rounds.

Lukaku had not been fit for Belgium’s group stage opener against Canada, whilst he was only ready to make a cameo appearance in their 2-0 loss to Morocco in their second match of the group.

The Nerazzurri striker was visibly not match-fit in that match, hardly having an impact.

In the Red Devils’ final group stage match, against Croatia, Lukaku was given a little more of a chance to prove himself.

The Inter striker came on at halftime with the scoreline at 0-0, in a match where a draw would send Belgium packing, whilst a win would see them through to the round of sixteen.

Several chances fell to the Inter striker, but he was unable to take any of them as he still looked some way from his ruthless best.

For the Gazzetta, this was enough to label Lukaku as having been among the flops of the tournament.
