Former Inter, Bologna, Lazio, and Torino midfielder Gaby Mudingayi feels that Inter’s contract extension talks with Milan Skriniar reflect the fact that the defender is central to the team.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via FCInter1908, the 41-year-old former Belgium international also expressed confidence that striker Romelu Lukaku can be back to his best soon.

Skriniar’s situation has been one of the most important at Inter in recent weeks.

Extending the Slovakian’s contract has been a major priority for the club who do not want to risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the current season when his deal expires.

The fact that no response has yet arrived from Skriniar has been the cause for some worry within the Nerazzurri.

For his part, Mudingayi feels that a loss of the 27-year-old defender would indeed by a significant one for Inter on the pitch.

“I believe that the club wants to extend the defender’s contract,” the former midfielder said.

“Inter certainly can’t allow him to leave on a free transfer,” he continued, “so the next few weeks will be decisive but I think the intention on both sides is to extend.”

“Skriniar would be useful for many teams, of course, but for Inter he’s a fundamental player.”

Mudingayi also spoke about striker Lukaku, stating that “He didn’t do well at the World Cup, but let’s remember that he was just coming back from several difficult months due to injury.”

“We know what he’s capable of, he’ll return to his level,” he said of the striker.
