Legendary former Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna feels that if Inter are able to beat Napoli in their return to Serie A action on January 4, they will open the title race right back up.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInter1908, Boninsegna gave his thoughts on the potential significance of the Nerazzurri’s head-to-head clash with the league leaders next month.

Inter won’t have to wait long for their shot at taking points off the Serie A league leaders.

The Nerazzurri host the Partenopei on January 4, in a match that could allow them to immediately cut the Campanian team’s lead on them from eleven points to eight.

Even this would hardly be enough to suddenly stop Napoli from being the favourites for the title, but it would at least give Inter something concrete to hold onto and a sense of momentum.

“It’s still open,” Boninsegna said of the Serie A title race, “there’s a lot to play for.”

“When there’s only one team ahead of the others, the pursuers can take turns reining them in and helping each other out.”

“But Napoli are the frontrunners right now, they had an excellent first part of the season, but this new winter break could also create problems for them.”

“It’s an unusual break, and we start again with this head-to-head clash.”

“Thinking of Inter, it would be a breath of fresh air for the team and the whole atmosphere,” Boninsegna added, “if they win this head-to-head clash they can believe in the Scudetto again.”

The former striker feels that “Inter, Milan and Juve can come back in it, Lukaku’s return is a key factor for Inter, Milan are proven, and with Juve it will remain to be seen if the issues that have emerged off the pitch in the last few weeks affect them.”
