Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that only the failure to win the Serie A title on the last day of the season prevented last season from being extraordinary.

Speaking in an excerpt from the “I Re di Calcio” program on Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInter1908, the coach gave his thoughts on his first season in charge of the Nerazzurri.

Inzaghi joined Inter in the summer of 2021 from Lazio, taking over from Antonio Conte.

Expectations for the former Biancocelesti coach’s first season in charge were uncertain.

The losses of some key players in the summer and the arrival of replacements meant that it was hard to predict what the true level of the team would be.

Whilst things were far from perfect for the Nerazzurri, a nine-match winning run in Serie A in the winter saw the team look to be favourites to win the title, before a dip in form and February and March brought them back down to earth.

Meanwhile, Inzaghi led the team to the Coppa Italia title for the first time in over a decade, along with the Supercoppa Italiana trophy and a place in the Champions League round of sixteen.

“We did very well in my first season here,” Inzaghi looked back, “we reached the Champions League round of sixteen, ending a decade-long wait for the fans, and we did as well as we could against Liverpool.”

The coach said that “It was a great season that could have become extraordinary if we’d won the Scudetto.”

“The goal that we, the players, and the club have all set for ourselves is to win,” he added, “it’s nice to play good football, but ultimately you have to win.”
