Roma have shown no willingness to increase their contract extension offer to defender Chris Smalling amid interest from Inter, Juventus, and several unnamed teams in the Premier League.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that on the contrary the Giallorossi are offering the 33-year-old a deal at lower wages, but for two seasons.

Smalling’s current deal with Roma, signed in 2020, contains the option for the former Manchester United defender to extend his deal for a further season if he appears in at least 50% of available minutes this season.

The option is on the player’s part, however, rather than his club’s.

Smalling has yet to make a decision on whether to take this option, whilst Roma have made clear that they will not offer him a deal at increased wages to entice him.

The Giallorossi would offer the Englishman a two-year deal at a decrease from the €3.5 million net that he currently earns, in the hope that the prospect of the security of a contract for a further season regardless of what happens with his form and injuries would be enough to convince him.
