Italian journalist Marco Bellinazzo feels that Italian football cannot afford to dwell on the spectre of Calciopoli.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via FCInterNews, the journalist stressed that right now there are more important matters than continuing to try and relitigate the controversy that was the Calciopoli scandal of the mid-2000s.

Calciopoli has become synonymous with controversy and corruption in Italian football.

The scandal which saw Juventus relegated from Serie B and several other major Italian club significantly sanctioned concerned intimidation and meddling in refereeing.

Comparisons have been drawn by some now that the Bianconeri are once again embroiled in scandal and legal trouble.

The capital gains investigations that have been opened into the Turin-based giants would have the capacity to bring about consequences just as significant as those of Calciopoli.

In Bellinazzo’s view, however, it would be inappropriate to fixate on these comparisons.

The journalist believes that the current scandals and problems must be met on their own terms, because they are too important to be attached to matters that are now well in the past.

“The history of Calciopoli is very complex,” he said, “it’s a chapter that should be abandoned to the past for the good of Italian football.”

“There are more urgent problems to be addressed,” he continued, “we must detach ourselves from the past.”
