Inter defender Francesco Acerbi believes that the fitness of striker Romelu Lukaku for the rest of the season will depend on the Belgian’s work in training.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the team’s 1-0 friendly win over Sassuolo, as reported by FCInterNews, the 34-year-old emphasized that Lukaku is hungry to use every opportunity in training to finally regain his best form and fitness.
Lukaku has now played nearly a full ninety minutes in each of Inter’s past two friendly matches against Reggina and Sassuolo.
Whilst the Belgian is still not at peak condition, he is getting closer and closer, and has a few more days left to train before the team return to Serie A action next week.
Questions will inevitably asked about what it will take for Lukaku to get back to his best, given that injuries and a lack of sharpness have largely rendered him unable to contribute over the first part of the season and at the World Cup.
According to Acerbi, however, there is no lack of motivation on the striker’s part, and he is working hard and getting closer every day.
“It takes him time to get back to his best condition because he is a very big and strong player,” he said when asked about Lukaku’s fitness.
“But it will depend on him in the end, and he’s shown a great desire to get back to his best, because he’s a great lad.”
