The counterattacking style of play that Inter used against Sassuolo could be an indicator of how Simone Inzaghi is approaching next week’s Serie A match against Napoli.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the Nerazzurri coach was testing out his tactics for the match against the Partenopei in yesterday’s friendly win over the Neroverdi.
Inter secured a 1-0 win over Sassuolo yesterday, and more importantly did so with a convincing performance.
The team did not particularly look to dominate possession of the ball, and on the contrary it was Sassuolo who had slightly more possession.
However, despite giving the Emilians time and space to build up play in certain areas, the Nerazzurri looked to have a clear plan to prevent chances, and to spring quick counterattacks.
This looked to be an effort to protect the backline and also to get the best out of strike pair Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku.
Given that Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli are every bit as much a possession team as Alessio Dionisi’s Sassuolo, the Corriere argue that this was clear evidence that Inzaghi was testing the prototype of his plan to try and negate the seemingly unstoppable Partenopei on Wednesday.
