Inter striker Romelu Lukaku insists that the Nerazzurri can still win the Serie A title this season, despite trailing leaders Napoli by 11 points.

Ahead of a clash against the Partenopei at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday, in the first match after the World Cup break, Lukaku was full of praise for Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti but argued that there was still plenty of football to be played, and it was too early to write Inter off.

In an interview with Italian television broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, the Belgium international spoke of his respect for Napoli but insisted that his side could still catch them before the end of the season.

“Luciano Spalletti is really strong; he’s done a great job we have to say. They have really strong players, I’ve been out and I’ve seen a lot of their games,” the Chelsea loanee declared.

“Napoli are going through a good period and they’re first in the standings. We have respect them but not be afraid.

“Until a team has lifted the trophy anything is possible. That’s the thing, until one has lifted the trophy everything is possible in football.”

Lukaku admitted that whilst it might seem improbable for fifth-place Inter to make up the ground on Napoli and secure the Scudetto, he refused to concede defeat.

“I always believe in it. That’s why we play football, you have to believe in the impossible. People say it’s impossible for us, but let’s see at the end of the season which team lifts the trophy and are champions.

“Nobody has won it yet, we are still there, there are still six months left. The season ends on 6 June, we are not yet on 4 January.”

Lukaku returned to Inter on loan from Chelsea this summer after a disappointing season in the Premier League last term, but has struggled for form and fitness.

The former Manchester United striker has scored twice in five appearances in all competitions.
