Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that, on present form, striker Edin Dzeko cannot drop out of the Nerazzurri’s starting eleven.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the former keeper suggested that it is time to play the Bosnian alongside Romelu Lukaku, as former Nerazzurri coach Antonio Conte had always hoped to do.

Dzeko and Lukaku have started Inter’s last two friendlies against Reggina and Sassuolo together in attack.

The duo looked like they had the chemistry to form a solid partnership leading the Nerazzurri’s line.

The presence of a striker of Lautaro Martinez will always mean that there is competition for the starting places in Inter’s attack, to say nothing of Joaquin Correa.

However, in the view of Zenga, it is Dzeko who is the man in form right now, and it is the right time to give him and Lukaku the chance to prove themselves as a strike partnership.

As far as the option of playing the duo alongside Martinez, Zenga said that “I think playing all three together would be difficult, even if they could try playing Lautaro further back.”

“What I can say is that at the moment Dzeko is the most undroppable,” he added, “Dzeko and Lukaku was the strike pair that Conte wanted at Inter and after the friendlies they’re the ones who have found the best understanding with each other.”

Zenga noted that “Lautaro has just come back from a World Cup which he won, but where he didn’t play particularly well.”

“I would have Dzeko and Lukaku play as a duo for the next two matches,” he suggested, “and then I’d have Lautaro come in to the team in place of one of the two, and then alternate depending on the match.”
