Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that his old side can get right back in the hunt for the Serie A title after beating Napoli on Wednesday.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, Bergomi gave the view that the Nerazzurri are once again serious Scudetto contenders based on the performance and result against the league leaders.

Inter will have felt that three points were all but necessary from their match against Napoli if they were to re-find their footing in the title race.

Simone Inzaghi’s team got what they came for and, just as importantly, did so in convincing fashion.

The coach will be looking at the performance that his team produced to hand the Partenopei their first Serie A loss of the season and thinking that if they keep up at the same level, getting back into the race for the title is anything but impossible.

“Inter are back in the race for the Scudetto,” Bergomi said.

“Yesterday’s win can give them self-belief, and it also gives the other teams chasing a platform to start to catch up.”

Bergomi noted that “There are still 22 matches to go, and a lot of points up for grabs.”

“The Nerazzurri had to win to get back into the title race, and they did so.”

Of the return of striker Romelu Lukaku in Wednesday’s match, Bergomi said that “He showed his determination with how he put the backline under pressure.”

“He always causes problems for teams who play with a high line,” the former defender said of Lukaku, “but he also relies on the ability of the players who are alongside him.”
