Former Inter midfielder Evaristo Beccalossi has insisted that the Nerazzurri must beat Monza in Serie A this evening as they still have a chance to win the title.

Simone Inzaghi’s side travel to the U-Power Stadium to take on Monza as they seek to build on Wednesday’s 1-0 win over leaders Napoli and close the gap at the top to five points, for the time being at least.

In an interview published in today’s newspaper edition of La Repubblica, Beccalossi suggested that there could be no excuses for Inter to win against another of his former clubs in Monza, particularly with the title race far from decided.

“I’m not surprised that the Brianza are doing so well but Inter must win and that’s it,” the 66-year-old declared.

“With Napoli, Milan and Juventus, the Scudetto challenge is wide open.

Beccalossi admitted that the presence of former Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and CEO Adriano Galliani, now at the helm of Monza, would give it the feel of a Derby della Madonnina.

“With Galliani and Berlusconi in the stands it will look a bit like a Milan vs Inter derby, even if the players don’t think about these things.”

The ex-midfielder also offered his thoughts on the passing of former Italy striker Gianluca Vialli, who lost his battle against cancer yesterday.

“He was a truly exceptional person, and that is not always said of those who pass on,” he added.

Beccalossi joined Inter from hometown club Brescia in 1978 and made 216 appearances for the Nerazzurri until 1984, winning the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia.

He moved on to Sampdoria and won the Coppa Italia there too, before spending a season at Monza in 1985-86.
