Inter are close to announcing a new contract for wingback Matteo Darmian after he agreed to sign a new contract with the club.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Manchester United defender has reached an agreement on an extension until the summer of 2024, with the option for a further year should he reach a certain amount of appearances for the club next season.

Darmian was due to be out of contract this summer but negotiations have been relatively smooth and the 33-year-old had been keen to extend his stay with Inter beyond the end of the current campaign.

The former Torino player has impressed when called upon by coach Simone Inzaghi and featured in the Nerazzurri’s crucial 1-0 win over league leaders Napoli on Wednesday, as Inter sought to get their Serie A title challenge back on track.

Darmian joined Inter on an initial loan from Parma in 2020 and has made 84 appearances for the club, winning the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia during his time at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
