Inter have been left with a mixture of anger and disappointment after conceding in stoppage time to draw 2-2 against Monza in Serie A yesterday.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri had good reason to feel frustrated after a refereeing blunder cost them dearly at the U-Power Stadium.
Leading 2-1 in the second half, Inter looked to have extended their lead when Francesco Acerbi scored, but referee Juan Lucca Sacchi blew his whistle for a foul on Pablo Mari by Roberto Gagliardini.
Replays showed that Mari had been tripped by teammate Armando Izzo, but as the whistle had been blown before the ball crossed the line VAR was unable to intervene, and the goal did not stand.
Meanwhile, there was also reason to be frustrated as Lautaro Martinez struck the post late on, as the Nerazzurri were unable to find a third goal.
Inter will see the draw as an opportunity missed after beating league leaders Napoli on Wednesday, with the gap at the top now down to seven points, though the Partenopei have a game in hand.
The disappointment was further amplified by Juventus snatching a late win against Udinese, and yesterday’s draw is being seen as potentially damaging to morale in the Nerazzurri dressing room.
