Referee Juan Luca Sacchi made a bigger mistake in Inter’s 2-2 draw against Monza yesterday than the error committed during AC Milan’s 2-1 defeat to Spezia last year.

According to Italian journalist Fabio Ravezzani, Sacchi’s error in failing to award a goal to Francesco Acerbi yesterday held greater significance than that of Marco Serra during the Rossoneri’s game last January.

Writing on Twitter, and as reported by FCInter1908.it, Ravezzani felt that Sacchi had made a grave error in blowing for a non-existent foul on Pablo Mari in the build up to Acerbi seemingly making it 3-1 to Inter, and stopping play before the ball had crossed the line.

Replays showed that Mari had been tripped by teammate Armando Izzo, but as the whistle had been blown before the ball went in, VAR were unable to intervene and correct the decision.

In contrast, Serra blew for a foul in favour of Milan during their league game against Spezia, but the loose ball was then lashed home by Junior Messias.

As the whistle had gone, the goal did not stand and the Rossoneri were instead forced to take their freekick, and ultimately went on to concede at the other end.

“Sacchi’s aggravating factor compared to Serra’s mistake in Milan-Spezia is that he hastily called a foul that wasn’t even there. In general, I understand a referee who doesn’t see an incident, I don’t justify one who invents it in his head when it doesn’t exist,” Ravezzani tweeted.
