Inter striker Lautaro Martinez feels that his team were hard done by with a refereeing error in their 2-2 draw away to Monza yesterday in Serie A, but that ultimately the team must acknowledge their own culpability for the result.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old reacted to the disappointing result, noting the role played both by a very questionable decision by Juan Luca Sacchi and by the team’s subpar performance on the pitch.

Inter led for the majority of yesterday’s match, but they could not extend their narrow 2-1 advantage, with left the team vulnerable to the shock equalizer in stoppage time from newly-promoted Monza.

The Nerazzurri could have made it 3-1 through a Francesco Acerbi header during the second half, but referee Sacchi blew his whistle moments before the goal was scored.

The official believed that there had been a foul committed by an Inter player during the set piece, though replays clearly showed that it had been a mix-up between two Monza players.

Accordingly, Acerbi’s goal could not count and the Nerazzurri could not extend their lead before the very late blow of a Denzel Dumfries own goal.

Martinez looked back at that moment, stating that “He could have waited three seconds to blow his whistle rather than right away, moments like that can change title races.”

Asked if the draw takes away some of the momentum of the Nerazzurri’s midweek win over Napoli, Martinez replied honestly that “Yeah, because we’d been talking during the week about how after wins against Atalanta and Napoli we had to keep the winning run going.”

“We’d hoped not to lose any more ground on the teams ahead of us, but now we have to admit our mistakes and analyze how we can do better.”
