Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin believes that Inter were one poor decision by referee Juan Luca Sacchi away from having a much more positive outlook after their Serie A clash with Monza over the weekend.

Writing for Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via FCInter1908, the journalist emphasized the view that without Sacchi’s error, the Nerazzurri would still be riding the high of their earlier win over Napoli in Serie A.

Inter were bitterly disappointed to drop two points in stoppage time of their match against Monza on Saturday, conceding a late shock equalizer.

In truth, the equalizing goal was probably a fair reflection of the run of play, as the newly-promoted Brianzoli were good value for a point out of the match.

However, this does not change the fact that Inter should probably have been 3-1 well before then, had Francesco Acerbi’s headed goal not been cancelled out by a premature and incorrect whistle by match official Sacchi.

“The error by Sacchi is very serious,” Biasin writes, “and it greatly changes the way that we judge Inzaghi and his team.”

He adds that “To be clear, if the referee hadn’t made this mistake, then today we’d be talking about a very different Inter, one who sure maybe concede too many goals, but are getting the job done and look like they mean business in 2023.”

“Instead, however, Sacchi has entered the same bracket of Serra in Milan-Salernitana and Marcenaro in Juventus-Salernitana, that is referees whose whistles have greatly affected the opinions of teams, and above all, the table.”
