Italian journalist Luca Marchetti believes that Inter will decide whether or not to extend Romelu Lukaku’s loan from Chelsea based on his performances, but that right now it’s too soon to say what they will decide.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInterNews, the Sky Sport Italia journalist explained that if the Nerazzurri feel that the injuries the 29-year-old has suffered from this season are specific to this campaign they will extend his loan, but otherwise they will not.

Lukaku’s persistent injury troubles have become a real problem for the Belgian, and for Inter.

The striker will be out for this evening’s Coppa Italia round of sixteen match against Parma, only the latest fixture in which he will not be able to play any part due to injury.

Moreover, even when the Belgian has been fit, the standard of his performances has been erratic, in large part due to the fact that his fitness has virtually never been close to the top level, and he has not played enough to gain real match-sharpness.

Marchetti explained that “I don’t know what his situation will be yet, I think it’s too early to evaluate what Lukaku is contributing to Inter relative to what the club has invested in him.”

“Lukaku said he had a detached tendon, there is talk of a serious injury that I don’t know if it will also play a part in future decisions.”

“He was out for three months,” the journalist noted, “it’s a serious injury.”

“However, there are questions that Inter have to ask before they extend his loan, and we know that he wants to stay at Inter at all costs.”

“If the injury is specific to this season, then Inter will be interested in extending his loan.”

“If, on the other hand, the injury is more serious, then the fact that he would cost €20 million is important,” he added.
